About

Running Wild is a German heavy metal band renowned for pioneering the pirate metal subgenre. Formed in 1976 in Hamburg, the group initially consisted of Rolf Kasparek (guitar, vocals), Preacher (guitar), Stephan (bass), and Hasche (drums). Over the years, the lineup has shifted significantly, with Kasparek remaining the sole constant member. Running Wild's sound is a robust blend of power metal, speed metal, and hard rock, with their third album, Under Jolly Roger (1987), marking a pivotal shift toward pirate-themed narratives that would define their illustrious career. Albums like Port Royal and Black Hand Inn further cemented their reputation in the metal world.

How to Sound Like Running Wild

Running Wild's music is characterized by its aggressive yet melodic metal sound, with a driving rhythm section that propels their epic storytelling. The guitar work is both powerful and intricate, often featuring soaring solos and galloping riffs that evoke the adventurous spirit of their pirate themes. Rolf Kasparek often employs Gibson Explorer and Flying V guitars, which contribute to the band's sharp, cutting tone. Amplification through units like the ENGL SAVAGE 120 and Mesa/Boogie Mark IV ensures a powerful, high-gain sound that captures the band’s energetic and robust musical attack. This combination of melodic precision and raw power is essential to capturing the essence of Running Wild's dynamic soundscapes.
