About

Ash Ra Tempel is a pioneering German band that emerged from the Berlin underground scene in 1970. Known for their innovative blend of electronic, progressive rock, space rock, and psychedelic rock, the group was founded by Manuel Göttsching (guitar, keyboards), Klaus Schulze (drums, keyboards), and Hartmut Enke (bass guitar). The band is renowned for their cosmic soundscapes and avant-garde approach, which helped lay the groundwork for the development of the Krautrock genre. Over the years, Ash Ra Tempel evolved into a project largely driven by Göttsching, who collaborated with various musicians, including the legendary Timothy Leary.

How to Sound Like Ash Ra Tempel

To recreate the ethereal and expansive sound of Ash Ra Tempel, musicians should focus on creating a tapestry of ambient and psychedelic textures. The band's music is characterized by sprawling, hypnotic guitar lines and layered electronic elements, creating an immersive auditory experience. Essential to this sound is the use of spacey delay and reverb effects, which can be emulated with devices like the Roland SRV-3030 24bit Digital Reverb and the Dynacord DRS 78 Digital Reverberation System. The incorporation of analog synthesizers, such as the Moog Modular Synthesizer, adds complexity and depth to their soundscapes, allowing for the creation of the celestial and otherworldly tones that define their music. This combination of organic instrumentation and electronic manipulation is key to capturing Ash Ra Tempel's distinctive sonic atmosphere.
