About
Atomic Rooster was a pioneering British progressive-rock band formed in 1969. Initially, the group consisted of Vincent Crane (organ), Nick Graham (bass), and Carl Palmer (drums). However, the lineup shifted over the years, with Crane serving as the constant driving force behind the band's evolving sound. Notable members over time included John Cann (guitar, vocals), Paul Hammond (drums), Pete French (vocals), Chris Farlowe (vocals), and Steve Bolton (guitar). Atomic Rooster is celebrated for its contributions to progressive rock, hard rock, and psychedelic rock, with a sound that skillfully blends elements of symphonic rock and British blues.
How to Sound Like Atomic Rooster
Atomic Rooster's sound is characterized by a dynamic blend of aggressive and melodic elements, underpinned by Crane's powerful organ lines that add a symphonic depth to their compositions. Their music often features raucous guitar riffs and driving rhythms that create an intense yet intricate sonic landscape. The use of guitars like the Fender '64 Stratocaster and amplification through Marshall 2203 heads contribute to their gritty and explosive sound. The distinctive fuzz-laden tones, achieved in part through effects such as the Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C, give their music a raw edge, while the drums maintain a robust, energetic presence. This amalgamation of textures and tones results in a sound that is both vintage and forward-thinking, capturing the essence of the late '60s and early '70s rock experimentation.
