About
Brand X is a pioneering British jazz-rock fusion band, originally formed as a side project by Genesis drummer Phil Collins and Atomic Rooster guitarist John Goodsall. With a lineup including Robin Lumley (keyboards) and Percy Jones (bass), Brand X emerged as a formidable force in the realms of jazz fusion, art rock, and progressive rock. Their blend of intricate musicianship and innovative compositions set them apart in the 1970s rock landscape. Known for albums like Unorthodox Behaviour and Moroccan Roll, Brand X continued to evolve, incorporating diverse musical styles and lineups even after Collins left to focus on Genesis. The band occasionally reformed in various configurations, maintaining their reputation for complex, instrumental-driven music.
How to Sound Like Brand X
Brand X’s sound is a dynamic tapestry woven from intricate rhythms and sophisticated harmonic structures. Their music is characterized by clean, articulate guitar lines often propelled by Goodsall's expert use of effects, creating both ambience and punch. The fluid, fretless bass lines of Percy Jones add a distinctively rich texture, intertwining seamlessly with the dense, polyrhythmic drumming that underpins their compositions. Utilizing gear such as the Ibanez EDA 905 bass and Paiste Formula 602 22" Ride, the band achieves a sound that is both technically precise and improvisationally free, making extensive use of synthesizers and effects processors like the Roland D-50 to further enhance their sonic palette with lush, symphonic textures.
