About

Black Cat Bones was a pioneering blues rock group hailing from London, formed in the late 1960s. The band's original lineup included Paul Kossoff (guitar), Stuart Brooks (bass), and Simon Kirke (drums). After Kossoff and Kirke departed to form the band Free, Brooks revamped the lineup by adding Brian Short (vocals), Derek Brooks (guitar), Rod Price (guitar, vocals), and Phil Lenoir (drums). This ensemble recorded their sole album, Barbed Wire Sandwich, in 1970, which has since been reissued multiple times, securing the group's legacy in the annals of acid rock history.

How to Sound Like Black Cat Bones

Black Cat Bones' sound is characterized by its gritty, electric blues energy, fused with the psychedelic undertones typical of the late '60s acid rock scene. Their music features raucous, overdriven guitar tones and dynamic, soulful rhythms. The use of powerful amplifier setups like the Orange Matamp and Hiwatt Custom 100 Amplifier Head provided the band with a booming, resonant sound that cut through the mix. Guitarist Paul Kossoff's choice of instruments, including the iconic 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard - Green Lemon, contributed to the rich, sustained tones that defined the band's music. To emulate Black Cat Bones' compelling sound, one should focus on capturing the raw, emotive power that blends bluesy expressiveness with an audacious rock edge.
