Carnivore was a Brooklyn-based metal band known for their aggressive sound and provocative themes. Formed in the mid-1980s by the larger-than-life bassist and vocalist Peter Steele, Carnivore's lineup also featured Louie Beateaux on drums, with guitar duties handled by Keith Alexander initially, and later Marc Piovanetti. The group carved its niche within the realms of thrash metal, speed metal, and crossover thrash, distinguished by their raw energy and often controversial lyrical content. Their discography includes two seminal albums, Carnivore (1986) and Retaliation (1987), both released under Roadrunner Records. Despite their short-lived career, Carnivore's impact on the metal scene was enduring, setting the stage for Steele's later success with Type O Negative.

Carnivore's sound is characterized by its ferocious, unrelenting energy, merging the fast-paced aggression of thrash metal with the gritty edge of hardcore punk. Their music features distorted and heavy guitar riffs, often achieved through gear like the Ibanez Destroyer used by Keith Alexander, complemented by the powerful tones of the Randall RG100ES amplifier. Peter Steele's bass lines, delivered with a Rickenbacker 4003 or Fender Jazz Bass, often employ the Boss DS-1 Distortion for added grit, reinforcing the band's intense and rebellious sound. The overall vibe is aggressive and confrontational, underscored by bold rhythms and a straightforward, no-frills approach to metal.
