Crystal Castles is a Canadian electronic music duo known for their abrasive yet melodic sound that fuses elements of electroclash, witch house, and electropunk. Formed in 2006 in Toronto, the group originally consisted of Ethan Kath (producer, multi-instrumentalist) and Alice Glass (vocals). The duo is celebrated for their raw, lo-fi aesthetic, which they cultivated through the use of modified equipment and experimental production techniques. After Glass's departure in 2014 to pursue a solo career, Kath continued the project with new vocalist Edith Frances, maintaining the band's distinct chaotic and haunting sound.

Crystal Castles' music is defined by its chaotic textures and aggressive energy, blending distorted synths with frenetic beats and ethereal vocals. Their sound is neither polished nor pristine; instead, it thrives on a gritty, lo-fi character reminiscent of early video game soundtracks, achieved through the use of gear like the Korg MS2000 and the Elektron SidStation. The juxtaposition of harsh, distorted tones from devices like the Boss DS-1 Distortion with Glass's haunting, echo-laden vocals, often captured with a Shure SM58, creates a soundscape that is both unsettling and captivating. This sonic intensity is further enhanced by Kath's penchant for analog synthesis and live manipulation, making their performances a visceral experience.
