Dirty Beaches is the musical project of Alex Zhang Hungtai, a multifaceted artist originally from Taiwan who relocated to Canada at a young age. Known for its atmospheric and experimental sound, Dirty Beaches blends elements of freak folk, nu gaze, drone, and garage psych, often presenting as a one-person band. Active from 2005 to 2014, Hungtai's work under this moniker spans a wide array of styles, from lo-fi post-rockabilly to ambient instrumentals, creating a sound that is both familiar and surreal. Over the years, Dirty Beaches released a series of albums, EPs, and cassettes through labels like Night People, Fixture Records, and Zoo Records, with notable works such as the critically acclaimed album Badlands.

Dirty Beaches' sound is characterized by its lo-fi, hypnotic, and often gritty textures, achieved through a combination of minimalistic instrumentation and found sounds. The music often features crooning vocals over drum machine loops, reminiscent of a retro rockabilly vibe fused with ambient drone. Hungtai's use of the Boss RC-2 Loop Station enables the creation of immersive, repetitive soundscapes that are both haunting and mesmerizing.
