About

Download is an experimental electronic and industrial group originating from Canada, renowned for their innovative fusion of styles such as industrial rock, IDM, and ambient. The group was initially founded in 1994 by cEvin Key (synths, production) and Dwayne Goettel of the legendary industrial band Skinny Puppy. After Goettel's passing, the project continued primarily as a collaboration between Key and Phil Western, with contributions from artists like Mark Spybey and Genesis P-Orridge. Download's discography spans a range of sonic landscapes, evolving from aggressive, sample-heavy tracks to more melodic and fully instrumental compositions.

How to Sound Like Download

Download’s sound is characterized by its dark, textural landscapes that interweave complex rhythms with ambient and glitch elements. Their music often uses a blend of gritty, distorted tones with more ethereal synth layers, creating an atmosphere that is both chaotic and hypnotic. Instruments like the Yamaha SY77 and Dave Smith Instruments Pro 2 synthesize rich, evolving soundscapes, while the E-mu SP-1200 contributes to their signature rhythmic, sample-driven style. Effects processors, such as the Yamaha SPX90, add depth and dimension, fueling their penchant for sonic experimentation and haunting, industrial motifs.
