About
Skinny Puppy is a seminal industrial music group formed in 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Initially a duo consisting of cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) on synthesizers and production and Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie) on vocals, the band later expanded with the addition of Dwayne Goettel in 1986, whose expertise in sampling and synthesizers played a crucial role in shaping their distinctive sound. Known for their pioneering contributions to the genres of industrial, electronic, and experimental music, Skinny Puppy blends elements of dark ambient, post-punk, and electro-industrial, creating an unsettling yet captivating sonic experience that has influenced countless artists in the alternative and electronic music scenes.
How to Sound Like Skinny Puppy
Skinny Puppy's sound is characterized by a dark, aggressive, and textured sonic landscape, often achieved through the use of complex sampling and layered electronic elements. Their music tends to be abrasive and confrontational, with a mix of distorted synths and driving rhythms. The group's use of gear like the Yamaha SY77 synthesizer and the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal distortion pedal contributes to their dense, noise-laden backdrop. The atmosphere is further intensified by haunting vocal effects, creating a sense of unease and tension. To emulate their sound, musicians might explore a combination of heavy distortion, intricate sampling, and dark, ambient soundscapes—a fusion that remains at the core of Skinny Puppy's enduring legacy.
