About
Felt was an influential English band known for their minimalist pop sound and eclectic blend of genres, including jangle pop, post-punk, and indie pop. Formed in 1979 in Water Orton, England, the band was spearheaded by the enigmatic Lawrence Hayward (vocals, guitar). He was joined by Maurice Deebank (guitar), whose classically trained background added intricate guitar interplay, and Gary Ainge (drums), who provided a steady rhythmic foundation. The band's lineup evolved over time, notably including Martin Duffy (keyboards), which added a rich textural layer to their music. Felt's sound was comparable to the likes of Television, with Lawrence's vocals drawing parallels to Lou Reed, all while maintaining a distinct identity.
How to Sound Like Felt
Felt's music is characterized by its clean, jangly guitar tones and minimalist yet evocative arrangements. The interplay between Lawrence's rhythmic strumming and Maurice Deebank's melodic guitar lines created a shimmering, ethereal sound. Guitars like the Gibson Les Paul Custom and Custom Super Strat were essential in crafting their distinctive jangle and warmth. The use of reverb and delay effects added a spacious quality to their compositions, enhancing the dreamy atmosphere. Meanwhile, the subtle yet effective drumming, paired with Duffy's keyboard contributions, often from instruments like the Hammond XK2 Organ, rounded out their sound with a lush, layered ambiance, making Felt's music both introspective and timeless.
