About

Psychic TV is an avant-garde multimedia collective and experimental rock group formed in 1981 by Genesis P-Orridge and Alex Fergusson of Alternative TV. Emerging from the dissolution of the industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV is renowned for their eclectic blend of genres, including industrial, psychedelic rock, electronic, and acid house. The group's lineup has evolved over the years, with notable members such as Edley O'Dowd (drums, production) contributing significantly since 2003. Psychic TV's music and performances are deeply intertwined with their provocative visual aesthetics and philosophical explorations, often drawing inspiration from literary and situationist philosophy.

How to Sound Like Psychic TV

Psychic TV's sound is a boundary-pushing tapestry of psychedelic and electronic textures, characterized by its experimental and often confrontational sonic landscape. Their music is both ambient and aggressive, seamlessly integrating elements of noise and melody. Key to their sound is the use of instruments and gear that enhance their avant-garde aesthetic. For instance, Genesis P-Orridge's use of the Gibson EB-0 bass anchors their sound with a deep, resonant foundation, while the Fender Coronado II, played by Rose McDowall, contributes to their rich, layered guitar textures. The group's recordings often feature an array of vintage microphones, such as the Telefunken U47, capturing the raw, atmospheric quality that defines their work. Psychic TV's unique blend of instruments and influences results in a sound that is both challenging and immersive, offering a complex auditory experience that defies conventional categorization.
