About

The Wake is a post-punk and new wave band hailing from Glasgow, Scotland, known for their moody yet melodic sound that weaves together elements of dream pop and gothic rock. Formed in 1981, the band's original lineup included Caesar (vocals, guitar), Carolyn Allen (keyboards), Steven Allen (drums), and Bobby Gillespie (bass), the latter of whom later gained fame with Primal Scream. With albums like Harmony and Here Comes Everybody, The Wake initially followed the post-punk footsteps of bands like New Order before evolving into a more pop-oriented sound under the Sarah Records label.

How to Sound Like The Wake

The Wake's sonic landscape is characterized by its melancholic yet jangly guitar lines and lush, atmospheric textures. Their sound often employs rich, chorus-laden guitar tones, evocative of the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus, known for its clean, expansive sound. The interplay of dreamy synths and shimmering guitars creates an ethereal ambiance, enhanced by the use of echo effects, such as the Roland RE-201 Space Echo, which adds depth and resonance to their music. The rhythm section supports this with restrained yet dynamic drumming and melodic bass lines, crafting a sound that is both haunting and uplifting.
