About

French Kicks is an American indie rock band known for their fusion of post-punk aggression with mod-inspired melodies and harmonies. Originating from Washington, D.C., the group was formed in 1998 by Matt Stinchcomb (guitar, vocals), Josh Wise (guitar, vocals), Jamie Krents (bass), and Nick Stumpf (drums, vocals, later keyboards). After relocating to Brooklyn, the band carved out a niche in the indie scene with their energetic and melodically rich sound. French Kicks' lineup evolved over the years, with Aaron Thurston later joining as the drummer and Kush El Amin as a guitarist. Their discography includes highlights like One Time Bells and Swimming, showcasing their ability to blend catchy hooks with a raw, emotive edge.

How to Sound Like French Kicks

French Kicks' sound is characterized by a dynamic interplay between jangly guitar riffs and driving rhythms, creating an energetic yet polished sonic landscape. Their music often features melodic guitar lines that cut through the mix, complemented by tight, punchy drumming and warm, rhythmic bass lines. To achieve their vibrant sound, musicians might explore using overdrive pedals for a gritty texture while maintaining clarity. Incorporating modulation effects like chorus or phaser can add depth to the guitar tones, capturing the band's penchant for melodic complexity. The integration of layered vocal harmonies and occasional keyboard textures further enriches their sound, providing a modern twist on classic indie rock elements.
