About
Craft Spells is an indie rock band that emerged from Stockton, California, known for their blend of dream pop, chillwave, and shimmer pop. Founded by Justin Paul Vallesteros (vocals, guitar, synths) in 2009, the group expanded to include members Anna Luxx Ryon (synths), Jack Doyle Smith (bass), and Peter Michel (drums). The band initially captured attention with their lo-fi, dreamy soundscapes and catchy rhythms, leading to their signing with the Brooklyn-based label Captured Tracks. Craft Spells’ music is characterized by its atmospheric layers and nostalgic yet modern indie garage rock vibe.
How to Sound Like Craft Spells
Craft Spells’ sound is ethereal and melodic, marked by lush, reverb-drenched guitar and synth layers that create a hazy, immersive atmosphere. Their music often features simple yet emotive synth lines, with the Roland JX-3P playing a crucial role in shaping their sonic palette. The band’s compositions are built on gentle, pulsating rhythms and dreamy textures, with a focus on creating an ambient, nostalgic feel. The use of delay and chorus effects enhances their shimmering sound, while the laid-back bass and drums provide a steady, unobtrusive foundation that complements Vallesteros' introspective vocal style. This combination results in a sound that is both soothing and evocative, perfect for capturing the essence of modern dream pop.
