About
JJ72 is an Irish alternative rock band, recognized for their emotive blend of Britpop and indie rock influences. Originating from Dublin in 1997, the group was founded by Mark Greaney (vocals, guitar) and Fergal Matthews (drums) during their time at Belvedere College. After experimenting with various bassists, they solidified their lineup with Hilary Woods (bass). The trio is known for their powerful and introspective songwriting, drawing inspiration from bands like Joy Division and Nirvana. JJ72 quickly gained attention with their evocative track "Oxygen," which helped establish them as a promising act in the indie music scene.
How to Sound Like JJ72
JJ72's sound is characterized by dynamic guitar-driven arrangements that blend raw energy with melodic introspection. Their music often features crisp, overdriven guitar tones, which can be achieved through the use of distortion and overdrive pedals combined with tube amplifiers for a warm, saturated sound. The guitar work in JJ72's tracks often balances lush chord progressions with piercing lead lines, creating an engaging sonic landscape. The rhythm section, anchored by Matthews' propulsive drumming and Woods' fluid bass lines, provides a solid yet expressive foundation that supports Greaney's soaring vocal delivery. To capture JJ72's compelling sound, musicians should focus on layering textures and maintaining a balance between melodic clarity and rhythmic intensity.
