About
Los Jaivas is a pioneering Chilean band renowned for their unique blend of rock en Español, Latin rock, and Andean folk music. Formed in the 1960s in Viña del Mar, the band originally consisted of Eduardo "Gato" Alquinta (vocals, guitar), Claudio Parra (keyboards), Eduardo Parra (keyboards), Gabriel Parra (drums), and Mario Mutis (bass). They became key figures in the Latin American music scene by merging traditional South American sounds with progressive rock and improvisational jazz, creating a genre-defying musical tapestry. The band has experienced changes over the years, notably after the tragic death of Gabriel Parra in 1988, when his daughter Juanita Parra stepped in as the drummer, ensuring the band's continuity.
How to Sound Like Los Jaivas
Los Jaivas' sound is characterized by its rich, melodic, and rhythmic textures that interweave traditional Andean instruments with electric rock elements. Their music often features vibrant and organic layers, with the electric guitar adding a dynamic edge through the use of effects like the Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger/Filter Matrix to create swirling, psychedelic textures. The keyboards contribute both atmospheric depth and melodic complexity, aided by instruments like the Yamaha CP88. The bass lines, delivered through gear like the Rickenbacker 4003, are robust and foundational, supporting the harmonic interplay. This fusion of traditional and modern elements gives Los Jaivas a sound that is both evocative and timeless, deeply rooted in cultural heritage yet boldly innovative.
