About

Madness is a British band known for their eclectic blend of ska, pop, and new wave. Originating from Camden Town, London, in 1976, the group solidified their lineup by 1978 with key members Graham "Suggs" McPherson (vocals), Mike Barson (keyboards), Chris Foreman (guitar), Lee Thompson (saxophone), Mark Bedford (bass), Chas Smash (vocals, trumpet), and Dan Woodgate (drums). Madness became an iconic part of the 2-Tone ska revival, initially capturing attention with their energetic and humorous take on ska and pop, which later evolved to incorporate influences from British pop and Motown, producing enduring hits like "Our House."

How to Sound Like Madness

The sound of Madness thrives on upbeat ska rhythms, blending infectious melodies with a quirky, joyful energy. Their music often features brassy saxophone lines and punchy keyboard riffs that create a lively and danceable atmosphere. The ska influence is evident in the rhythmic guitar work, often achieved with guitars like the Gibson Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar used by Chris Foreman, which adds a warm and full-bodied texture to their tracks. The drumming, notably with the Ludwig Black Beauty snare, provides a crisp and dynamic foundation, accentuating the band’s energetic live performances. The keyboard elements, sometimes delivered through iconic instruments like the Vox Super Continental, contribute to the band's distinctively vibrant and catchy sound. Madness’s music is characterized by its lively, playful nature and the ability to seamlessly blend nostalgic influences with a modern pop sensibility.
