Mike Barson's Gear
Mike Barson is playing a Yamaha YC45D; it can be seen quite clearly at 0:25.
Korg caught up with Mike putting the SV-1 through its paces while on tour in the UK. "It sounds fantastic. Very nice piano sounds. It's really excellent. I expect to be getting a lot of pleasure form this in the coming years! "
I asked Daren who looks after Mikes stuff and he told me:
“We use 2 x Doepfer PK88’s, one of the most solid keyboards you can get. One of them literally fell off the back of a lorry and all that broke was one key! The two tier set up I designed with Mike and had the whole thing made, also the stand is bespoke, hand made and re-enforced. We use 4 Macbook pro’s to control the keyboards and extra sounds and all the midi is a bespoke design that I’m currently re-configuring. The whole thing is constantly being updated as technology changes”.
This is his most commonly used set up, being used since around 2007 (post Dangermen Sessions). Source: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7LDXKdVzKLE It’s used on the majority of studio recordings and live appearances from The Liberty of Norton Folgate onward.

In this video at 0:35 you can see Mike Barson is using two KX88’s. This same equipment is used throughout the whole of the Madstock ‘99 concert, often with the lower keyboard as a piano sound and the upper used as an organ sound.
In the video at 4:12 you can see Mike Barson using two Roland RD-700’s stacked.
In the photo you can see the back of a Hammond Xk5. Mike Barson is using both lower and higher manuals as you can tell by the change in wood colour halfway down.
In this video you can clearly see Mike Barson using the Yamaha CP300 at 1:04. It’s taken from the Christmas Sessions in 2011.
