About

McGuinn, Clark & Hillman was a country rock supergroup formed in 1977, composed of Roger McGuinn (guitar, vocals), Gene Clark (vocals, guitar), and Chris Hillman (bass, vocals), all former members of the legendary band The Byrds. The trio sought to rejuvenate the sound that had defined their earlier careers, blending harmonies and instrumental prowess to create a distinctive fusion of rock and country. Although their collaboration was relatively brief, they left a significant mark on the genre, appealing to fans who loved the signature jangle and melodic sensibility of The Byrds.

How to Sound Like McGuinn, Clark & Hillman

The sound of McGuinn, Clark & Hillman is characterized by its clean, melodic textures and rich vocal harmonies, reminiscent of their Byrds legacy but with a modernized twist. A key component of their sonic palette was McGuinn's use of the Rickenbacker 360/12 12-String Hollowbody, which delivered the shimmering, jangly tones essential to their music. This was complemented by the warmth of Hillman’s bass lines, often played on the Fender American Vintage Jazz Bass, providing a smooth, rhythmic foundation. Clark's vocal and acoustic contributions, frequently featuring the Gibson Dove Acoustic Guitar, added depth and a folk-like authenticity to their sound. Together, these elements crafted a blend of clarity and warmth, making their music both nostalgic and fresh.
