About
The Flying Burrito Brothers were a pioneering American band that blended elements of country rock, folk rock, and psychedelic rock to create a sound that would become foundational in the genre of alternative country. Formed in Los Angeles in 1968, the original lineup consisted of Gram Parsons (vocals, guitar), Chris Hillman (bass, vocals), "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar), and Chris Ethridge (bass), with several drummers contributing to their recordings. Parsons and Hillman, both former members of The Byrds, were instrumental in steering the band towards a fusion of rock and country that they dubbed "cosmic American music."
How to Sound Like The Flying Burrito Brothers
The Flying Burrito Brothers' sound is characterized by its rich, twangy guitar lines and the ethereal wail of the pedal steel, courtesy of "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow. This blend creates a warm yet haunting sonic palette that is both melodic and slightly psychedelic. Gram Parsons' use of a Fender Telecaster brought a crisp, biting edge to the band’s arrangements, while the lush acoustic textures of his Gibson J-200 added depth to their recordings. The interplay between electric and acoustic instruments, combined with the organic drive of a Fender Deluxe Reverb amplifier, helped to craft their timeless, genre-defining sound.
