Operation Ivy was a pioneering American band that blended the raw energy of hardcore punk with the rhythmic flair of ska punk. Formed in Berkeley, California, in 1987, the group consisted of Jesse Michaels (vocals), Tim Armstrong (guitar), Matt Freeman (bass), and Dave Mello (drums). Their innovative sound and socially conscious lyrics quickly gained them a devoted following in the Bay Area punk scene. Despite their brief two-year existence, Operation Ivy left an indelible mark on the punk genre, influencing countless bands that followed, including legendary acts like Rancid, which Armstrong and Freeman later formed.
