About

Choking Victim is a pioneering band in the punk and ska scenes, originating from the squats of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Known for their raw, energetic blend of hardcore punk, ska punk, and folk punk, the group was initially formed as No Commercial Value in the early '90s by Scott Sturgeon (aka Stza, vocals, guitar) and Alec (bass). Over time, they evolved into Choking Victim, with a lineup that also included Skwert (drums) and several other rotating members such as guitarist Ezra. Despite a tumultuous history, including a breakup during the recording of their debut album No Gods, No Managers, they left a lasting impact on the punk community with their politically charged lyrics and distinctive sound.

How to Sound Like Choking Victim

Choking Victim's music is characterized by a gritty, aggressive sonic palette that fuses the chaotic energy of punk with the upbeat rhythms of ska. Their sound is decidedly raw and unpolished, with heavy distortion and fast-paced, choppy guitar riffs that drive their tracks forward. Guitars like the Fender Telecaster and Epiphone T310 contribute to their cutting, abrasive tones, which are often paired with punchy, rhythmic bass lines and frenetic drumming. The incorporation of ska elements adds a bouncy, melodic counterpoint to the otherwise gritty soundscape, creating a dynamic and rebellious musical experience. This blend of styles reflects their DIY ethos and the anarchic spirit of their music, making their sound both confrontational and infectious.
