About
Descendents is a seminal American punk rock band originating from the South Bay area of Los Angeles in 1978. Known for their raw energy and melodic sensibility, the band initially formed as a power trio with Tony Lombardo (bass), Bill Stevenson (drums), and Frank Navetta (guitar). In 1980, the group recruited Milo Aukerman (vocals), whose presence solidified their status as key figures in the Southern California punk scene. The Descendents are celebrated for pioneering a blend of hardcore punk, punk rock, and pop punk, influencing countless bands in these genres. Their early works, including the groundbreaking album Milo Goes to College, remain pivotal in the punk rock canon.
How to Sound Like Descendents
The Descendents' sound is characterized by its fast-paced, aggressive yet melodic approach, blending the raw intensity of hardcore punk with catchy hooks and personal, often humorous lyrics. The guitar work, typically delivered through powerful riffs and rapid chord progressions, benefits from the use of Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay guitars, which provide a bright, cutting tone. Amplified by the likes of a Marshall JCM800 2203, their sound achieves the gritty edge synonymous with punk. The dynamic drumming of Bill Stevenson propels the music forward with relentless energy, while the driving bass lines, often delivered on a Fender Precision Bass, anchor the band's high-octane compositions, creating a tight, cohesive sound that resonates with punk enthusiasts.
