About

Pegboy is a seminal American punk band originating from Chicago, Illinois, known for their fusion of hardcore punk, skate punk, and melodic hardcore. Formed in 1990, Pegboy was a collaboration of notable figures from the Chicago punk scene. The band features John Haggerty (guitar), previously of Naked Raygun, his brother Joe Haggerty (drums), with roots in Bloodsport and The Effigies, Larry Damore (vocals), and Steve Saylors (bass), both former members of Bhopal Stiffs. After Saylors' departure, Pierre Kezdy, also a Naked Raygun alum, joined to solidify the lineup. Pegboy's dynamic sound and energetic performances have made them a staple in the punk community, with albums like Strong Reaction and Earwig earning them critical acclaim.

How to Sound Like Pegboy

Pegboy's sound is characterized by raw, aggressive guitar riffs and driving rhythms that underscore their punk ethos. The guitar tones are gritty and powerful, often achieved through the use of overdriven tube amps that add a distinctive punch and edge to their music. To capture Pegboy's sonic energy, musicians should focus on tight, fast-paced drumming and punchy bass lines that lock in with the rhythm guitar. The vocals are delivered with fervor and intensity, often featuring a melodic edge that complements the hardcore backdrop. Emphasizing minimalist production techniques and maintaining a lively, unpolished sound will help replicate the rawness and immediacy that define Pegboy's music, drawing inspiration from the early '90s punk scene.
