About
Poco is an American band that emerged in the late 1960s, carving a niche in the evolving landscape of country rock. Formed from the remnants of Buffalo Springfield, the group originally featured Richie Furay (vocals, guitar), Jim Messina (guitar, vocals), Rusty Young (steel guitar, vocals), Randy Meisner (bass, vocals), and George Grantham (drums, vocals). Poco's music intricately weaves elements of rock, folk, and country, distinguished by harmonious vocals and skillful instrumentation. With a career spanning multiple decades, Poco is lauded as one of the pioneers of the country rock genre, influencing a wave of bands in the 1970s and beyond.
How to Sound Like Poco
Poco's sound is characterized by rich vocal harmonies and the intertwining of acoustic and electric textures. Their musical aesthetic is both warm and inviting, often featuring the bright, ringing tones of the steel guitar played by Rusty Young, which adds a distinctive twang to their arrangements. The Fender Standard Stratocaster used by Jim Messina contributes a crisp, clean guitar tone that's frequently augmented by the MXR M102 Dyna Comp for smooth compression and sustain. The rhythm section, anchored by Randy Meisner's melodic bass lines often played on a Hagström HIIB Bass, provides a steady yet dynamic foundation, enhancing the band's rootsy sound. This blend of instruments and techniques creates a sonic palette that is both melodic and rhythmic, embodying the essence of the country rock movement.
