About
Pom Poko is a dynamic Norwegian musical group renowned for their exuberant blend of genres, including garage psych, chamber psych, bubblegrunge, and contemporary jazz. Formed in Trondheim, the band consists of Ragnhild Fangel Jamtveit (vocals), Martin Miguel Almagro Tonne (guitar), Ola Djupvik (drums), and Jonas Krøvel (bass). Tonne, Djupvik, and Krøvel met at the Trondheim Music Conservatory, initially forming a noise punk trio before adding Jamtveit’s distinctive vocals to create a unique sound that merges experimental and pop elements. Named after a Studio Ghibli film, Pom Poko's music is characterized by its playful unpredictability and high-energy performances, drawing influences from math rock, post-punk, and eclectic global sounds.
How to Sound Like Pom Poko
Pom Poko's sonic character is a vibrant juxtaposition of sugary melodies and explosive rhythms, creating an atmosphere that is both chaotic and meticulously composed. Their sound is defined by fuzzy, distorted guitar tones, often achieved through gear like the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi and the Fender Blues Junior III 15W 1x12 Tube Guitar Combo Amp, which provide a raw, garage-like edge. Tonne’s use of effects, such as the Electro-Harmonix Micro POG and Line 6 Tonecore Echo Park, infuses their music with both depth and playful intricacy. The rhythm section, driven by Djupvik’s dynamic drumming and Krøvel’s pulsating bass lines, underpins their compositions with a groove that is both infectious and complex. Pom Poko’s music thrives on its experimental flair and lively energy, making it a fascinating exploration for musicians looking to embrace a spirited and unconventional sound.
