About
Coil was a pioneering British music group known for their avant-garde approach to electronic and experimental music. Formed in 1982, the core members were John Balance (vocals, musician) and Peter Christopherson (programmer, visual artist). Over their two-decade span, they explored a wide range of genres, including industrial rock, dark ambient, and psychedelic music. Emerging from connections with influential acts like Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV, Coil became an esteemed entity within the post-industrial music scene. Their work often delved into esoteric and controversial themes, making them a unique voice in the world of experimental music.
How to Sound Like Coil
Coil's sonic landscape is characterized by its intricate layering of dark, atmospheric textures and haunting sonic landscapes. Their sound is often ambient yet unsettling, with an emphasis on creating a mystical and otherworldly aura. Using a blend of analog and digital equipment, such as the Oxford Synthesizer Company OSCar and the Akai S1000 sampler, they crafted music that is both ethereal and foreboding. The Boss RBF-10 Flanger added swirling, modulated effects, enhancing the eerie quality of their compositions. Coil's music invites listeners to venture into a realm of sonic exploration, where the boundaries between dream and reality blur, and every sound serves as a portal to deeper, often darker themes.
