Colin Newman's Gear
"I had a Roland JC120, but now I use a JC40 which is smaller and cuter!"
In this interview, Colin is asked, "What have been the best and worst guitar related purchases you’ve made?" He responds, "Same guitar - Ovation Breadwinner. Looks fantastic, sounds like a heap of shit!" He can be seen playing this instrument throughout the videotaped live performance on a Rockpalast television broadcast in 1979 (packaged and sold on DVD and CD as "Wire - Live On The Box"). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhtYeJXNNbU
Both Newman and fellow Wire guitarist Bruce Gilbert utilized the HD-130 during the band's early days. The amps are visible onstage in this televised live performance from 1979.
This post from Newman's Facebook page shows him receiving a KTR directly from Bill Finnegan backstage at a Wire performance in Boston.
On his official website, Colin Newman of Colin Newman & Corrado Izzo, Wire, Githead, and Spigel*Newman*Colin*Malka, lists a Danelectro Baritone guitar as an instrument used at his Swim Studio.

"One thing I use a lot in my Wire setup is my original MXR Phase 100, which is a pretty good phaser." Catch this interview with Colin Newman of Colin Newman & Corrado Izzo, Wire, Githead, and Spigel*Newman*Colin*Malka.
Producer Mike Thorne describes the recording of Wire's single, "I Am the Fly," on his Stereo Society website. "The singer and second guitarist, Colin Newman, had acquired an MXR Flanger pedal (I forget how, but I remember acutely that the one I bought out of my own pocket, specifically for the single's recording sessions, was over £100 ($200 in 1978). The essence of the single seemed to be turning all the controls to maximum. That became the introduction to the track, and a classic sound. Somehow, that introductory sound reminds me inescapably of Colin's personality."
Newman's website lists the Monster as a pedal used in his ~SWIM studio (and presumably also in his live setup, as well).
In this image, we can see Newman performing live with his white Classic 12.
"I'm using a [Roland] JC-120. That's because it's got a simplicity about it that I like. It's in stereo — well, it's got a stereo out but no stereo in. But if you mic up both of the speakers, you do get a stereo picture.Stereo is quite important to me. Most of the guitars on Red Barked Tree and other Wire records always are all stereo. I love stereo guitars. I think having one guitar on the left and one guitar on the right mainly sounds stupid. If you want to make a wall of sound, stereo is very good. The stereo chorus you get in the Roland JC-120 is the same kind of stereo chorusing you get in the MXR stereo chorus. This is a Seventies chorus. It's completely different to the kind of Boss pedal chorus, which is kind of an Eighties chorus where you hear the chorusing sound. Seventies chorus is all about making something wide. You don't necessarily hear the chorusing, you just click it on and suddenly it just sounds bigger."
The Swim Studio gear list hosts many pieces of gear from Colin Newman's of Colin Newman & Corrado Izzo, Wire, Githead, and Spigel*Newman*Colin*Malka, studio, and included is Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3.

"The only synth I've ever actually owned is a Casio CZ1000, which I like in combination with a DX and an analogue synth rather than on its own. The CZ is squeaky, Rolands are big, and the DX somewhere in between, so I like the kind of complete, round sound where you get a bit of everything chucked in."
"Combinations of the same sound also work very well - six synthesisers all playing the same thing can sound great. If you track a part you can never match the two parts perfectly. Something I did a while ago used an Emulator II cello preset which I tracked about five times, and it acquired a totally different character to the original patch. If you track a sequencer and alter the varispeed, the timecode will keep it in sync but the pitch will vary. You can do that as many times as you want and get massive sounds."
"My first LP was called A-Z. That was the first time I recorded with the Synclavier. The other thing we were using then was the EMS Synthi, which was great for guitar treatments. At that point I was very much into treatments of sound using guitar treatments on voices and anything else."
