About
Quando Quango was a pioneering post-disco and Chicago house group formed in the early 1980s. Originating from a collaboration between English and Dutch musicians, the lineup featured Mike Pickering (vocals and percussion) and Hillegonda "Gonnie" Rietveld (keyboards and vocals), with contributions from notable artists such as Vini Reilly (guitar). Their music fused the rhythmic elements of funk and Latin-infused dance music with the burgeoning electronic sounds of the era, making them a unique presence in the post-punk Manchester scene.
How to Sound Like Quando Quango
Quando Quango's sound is characterized by its eclectic blend of rhythmic grooves and electronic textures. The use of instruments like the Gibson Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar and Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar provided a solid foundation for their danceable yet experimental compositions. Warm, analog effects such as the Roland RE-201 Space Echo added depth and dimension, while the Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amplifier contributed a clean, chorus-rich tone that complemented their vibrant, rhythmic bass lines and pulsating synth patterns. The combination of crisp electronic beats and organic instrumentation created an inviting, dance-friendly atmosphere that was both forward-thinking and accessible.
