About
Sigue Sigue Sputnik is a British new wave band formed in 1982 by former Generation X bassist Tony James. Known for their futuristic, postmodern aesthetic and provocative media presence, the group included Martin Degville (vocals), Neal X (guitar), Chris Kavanagh (drums), and Ray Mayhew (drums). Their music is a unique blend of new wave, electronica, and post-punk, characterized by a high-energy, glam-infused sound that often served as a vehicle for their tongue-in-cheek commentary on consumer culture and the music industry.
How to Sound Like Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Sigue Sigue Sputnik's sound is both futuristic and raw, combining the brashness of punk with electronic elements that evoke a sense of synthetic chaos. The band's sonic character is marked by aggressive yet melodic guitar riffs, driven by Neal X's use of a Gibson ES-295 and processed through a Roland Chorus Echo SRE-555 to create expansive, echo-laden textures. Tony James's use of synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7 and Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter adds a layer of electronic grit, complementing the driving rhythms of Kavanagh's Simmons SDS 7 drum machine. This combination of electronic and rock elements results in a sound that is both theatrical and rebellious, capturing the essence of their iconic, media-savvy persona.
