About
Six Feet Under is a formidable force in the American death metal scene, hailing from Tampa, Florida. Founded in 1993, the band originated as a side project of Chris Barnes (vocals) from Cannibal Corpse and Allen West (guitar) from Obituary. Over time, it evolved into a primary venture, with a lineup that has included notable musicians such as Terry Butler (bass) and Greg Gall (drums). Their sound is a gritty blend of death metal, groove metal, and brutal death metal, often referred to as "death 'n' roll" due to its incorporation of rock 'n' roll elements into the intensity of death metal. With themes that focus on graphic violence and death, Six Feet Under stands out for their straightforward, powerful approach to the genre.
How to Sound Like Six Feet Under
Six Feet Under's musical onslaught is characterized by heavy, aggressive riffs and plodding grooves, creating a sound that is both raw and unrelenting. The band achieves this daunting sonic atmosphere using gear such as the Randall RG 1503 Head for its sharp, cutting distortion and the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer to add a layer of overdrive that complements the crushing low-end from the bass. Their music leans heavily on the rhythmic interplay between guitar and drums, resulting in a sound that is both forceful and engaging. The vocals, delivered with Barnes' signature guttural growls and high-pitched squeals, contribute an additional layer of intensity, making Six Feet Under's aural assault both visceral and memorable.
