About

Skids is a Scottish art-punk band that emerged from Dunfermline in 1977, blending genres such as post-punk, new wave, and punk rock. The original lineup featured Richard Jobson (vocals), Stuart Adamson (guitar), William Simpson (bass), and Tom Kellichan (drums). Skids quickly gained attention with their energetic anthems and dramatic flair, making a mark with singles like "Into the Valley" and "The Saints Are Coming". Their sound evolved over the years, influenced by their changing lineup and Jobson's ambitious musical vision, which at times led to shifts in their stylistic approach.

How to Sound Like Skids

Skids' music is characterized by anthemic guitar riffs and driving rhythms, creating an energetic yet melodic soundscape. The band's sonic character is both aggressive and melodic, often employing jangly guitars and pulsating bass lines to craft their distinctive post-punk vibe. Stuart Adamson's use of guitars such as the Gibson ES-335 Dot and Yamaha SG2000 contributed to the band's dynamic range, while effects like the MXR M117R Flanger added a layer of textural depth. The punchy, articulate drumming and commanding vocals further define their sound, which balances raw punk energy with the sophistication of new wave melodies.
