About

Rich Kids was a British musical group that emerged in the late 1970s, known for their fusion of New Wave, Power pop, and Post-punk styles. Founded by Glen Matlock following his departure from the Sex Pistols, the band included Midge Ure (vocals, guitar), Stella Nova (guitar), and Rusty Egan (drums). Their singular album, Ghosts of Princes in Towers, showcased their experimental approach to the pop and rock genres, distancing themselves from the rawness of punk to explore more melodic and intricate musical landscapes. Despite their brief existence, the Rich Kids left a lasting impression with their unique sound and innovative blend of genres.

How to Sound Like Rich Kids

The Rich Kids' sound is characterized by a melodic yet edgy tone, distinguished by its clear guitar lines and rhythmic precision. This was frequently achieved using instruments like the Fender Stratocaster played by Midge Ure, which contributed to the band’s crisp and vibrant sound. The group's music often featured the textural depth of analog synthesizers, such as the Yamaha CS-50, adding a lush, atmospheric layer to their post-punk core. The drumming was tight and dynamic, providing a driving force that complemented the melodic bass lines. Overall, the Rich Kids crafted a sound that was both polished and energetic, drawing on the boldness of punk while embracing the melodic sensibilities of New Wave.
