About
Subhumans is a seminal U.K. anarcho-punk band that emerged from the Trowbridge area of Wiltshire in 1980. The group consists of Dick (vocals), Bruce (guitar), Phil (bass), and Trotsky (drums). Known for their literate and politically charged lyrics, Subhumans carved out a niche in the punk scene with a sound that bridged the political fervor of The Clash and the experimental edge of Crass. Over the years, they've released numerous albums and EPs on their own Bluurg label, challenging societal norms and advocating for change through their music.
How to Sound Like Subhumans
Subhumans' sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive energy and punk ethos. Their music typically features fast-paced, driving rhythms that are both melodic and chaotic, creating a sense of urgency. The guitar work is edgy and confrontational, often utilizing overdriven tones that cut through the mix. To capture their sound, musicians might explore using distortion pedals and solid-state amps to achieve a gritty, uncompromising tone. The basslines are punchy and prominent, providing a powerful foundation that complements the relentless drumming, which is both explosive and tightly controlled. The overall production style is unpolished and direct, reflecting the band's DIY roots and anarchic spirit.
