About
Summoning is an Austrian musical group renowned for their unique blend of black metal, dark ambient, and dungeon synth. Formed in Vienna in 1993, the band originally consisted of Michael Gregor (Silenius - vocals, keyboards), Richard Lederer (Protector - keyboards, guitar, programming), and Alexander Trondly (Trifixion - drums). Following Trondly's departure after their debut album Lugburz, Gregor and Lederer continued as a duo, frequently collaborating with guest musicians. Summoning is celebrated for their epic soundscapes that draw heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, making them pioneers in the niche genre of Tolkien metal.
How to Sound Like Summoning
Summoning's music is characterized by its atmospheric and epic sonic landscapes. Their sound is built on lush, symphonic textures created through extensive use of keyboards and synthesizers, often evoking the grandeur of sweeping orchestral arrangements. To capture their immersive sound, one could incorporate layered synth pads and choral samples, which add depth and a sense of otherworldliness. The guitars are typically heavily distorted yet melodic, creating a blend of aggression and harmony. Utilizing digital amp simulators or high-gain tube amps can emulate their robust guitar tone. The percussion is largely programmed, offering a precise, rhythmic foundation that complements the ethereal layers. To replicate their epic and atmospheric aura, musicians might explore reverb and delay effects to craft a vast, enveloping soundscape that mirrors the mystical themes prevalent in their music.
