Bathory was an influential extreme metal band from Vällingby, Sweden, founded on March 16, 1983. The brainchild of Quorthon (real name: Thomas Börje Forsberg), who was the primary songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Bathory is frequently credited with pioneering both the black metal and viking metal genres. While Quorthon was the driving force, the band also featured a rotating lineup of session musicians during the 1980s, though later works were predominantly solo efforts by Quorthon himself. Bathory's music is marked by its raw aggression, dark themes, and epic storytelling, drawing heavily from pagan and Norse mythology.

Bathory's sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive tones and atmospheric depth, blending the visceral intensity of early black metal with the epic scope of viking metal. The guitar work often features harsh, distorted riffs and haunting, melodic interludes, achieved through instruments like the Ibanez Destroyer and Gibson Flying V. These guitars, paired with Quorthon's preference for saturated, overdriven amplifiers, create a sound that is both ferocious and expansive.
