About

Handsome Furs is a Canadian indie duo known for their unique blend of electronic and indie rock influences. Formed in 2005 in Montreal by husband-and-wife team Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry, the band emerged as a side project for Boeckner, who is also the frontman of Wolf Parade. In Handsome Furs, Boeckner takes on vocal and guitar duties, while Perry provides electronic textures and beats. Their music is characterized by atmospheric soundscapes and world-weary melodies, with influences drawn from their experiences and travels, notably in Eastern Europe and Asia.

How to Sound Like Handsome Furs

The sonic character of Handsome Furs is gritty yet melodic, combining electronic beats with raw guitar tones. This juxtaposition creates a sound that is both ambient and aggressive, reflecting the duo's DIY ethos. Boeckner's use of the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent Signature guitar delivers a sharp yet versatile tone, often enhanced by the Fulltone OCD Obsessive Compulsive Drive for an overdriven edge. The integration of drum machines and synthesizers, such as the Korg Electribe EMX-1, adds a layer of rhythmic complexity, while effects like the EarthQuaker Devices Transmisser provide reverb-laden atmospheres. This combination of analog warmth and digital precision gives Handsome Furs their distinctive, immersive sound.
