About
T. Rex is a seminal English rock band known for pioneering the glam rock movement of the early 1970s. Originating from London, the group was the brainchild of Marc Bolan, who served as the band's frontman, guitarist, and principal songwriter. Initially starting as a folk duo called Tyrannosaurus Rex, the band transitioned into a full-fledged rock outfit, embracing a sound that fused elements of glam rock, psychedelic rock, and proto-punk. Key members included Mickey Finn (percussion), Steve Currie (bass), and Bill Legend (drums), each contributing to the band's eclectic and influential style. T. Rex achieved widespread acclaim with hits like "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" and albums such as Electric Warrior and The Slider, leaving an indelible mark on rock music.
How to Sound Like T. Rex
T. Rex's sound is characterized by its glamorous, gritty guitar riffs and Bolan's distinctive, charismatic vocals. The band's music often oscillates between punchy, rhythmic rock 'n' roll and more whimsical, psychedelic textures. This sonic duality is partly achieved through Marc Bolan's use of guitars like the Gibson Marc Bolan Les Paul, which delivers a rich, sustain-heavy tone perfect for glam rock's flamboyant style. Bolan frequently employed fuzz pedals like the MXR M103 Blue Box, providing the band’s sound with a raw, distorted edge that captures the spirit of proto-punk. The use of the Dallas Rangemaster treble booster further accentuates the treble-heavy, cutting guitar tones that are synonymous with T. Rex's vibrant and timeless sound.
