About

Television is a seminal rock band that emerged from New York City’s vibrant punk scene in the mid-1970s. Originally formed as The Neon Boys, the group transformed into Television with the lineup of Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar), Richard Lloyd (guitar), Billy Ficca (drums), and Richard Hell (bass), who was later replaced by Fred Smith. Known for their innovative blend of art rock, punk, and post-punk, Television eschewed traditional rock norms, opting for complex, interwoven guitar lines and avant-garde song structures. Their 1977 debut album, Marquee Moon, is often cited as a groundbreaking work that paved the way for the evolution of alternative rock.

How to Sound Like Television

Television's sound is characterized by its angular guitar work and intricate, lyrical solos that carve out a unique sonic landscape. The interplay between Verlaine and Lloyd's guitars is both melodic and rhythmic, creating a tension-filled, yet harmonious atmosphere. The use of Fender Jazzmaster and Fender Stratocaster guitars, coupled with Music Man HD-130 4x10 Combo amps, provides a clean yet edgy tone that is both versatile and distinct. Effects such as the MXR M169 Carbon Copy delay pedal add layers of depth, while tight, precise drumming and propulsive bass lines anchor the band’s complex arrangements. Television’s music thrives on its raw energy and experimental spirit, making it a rich source of inspiration for musicians looking to explore the boundaries of rock.
