About
Taproot is a dynamic rock band hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, known for their intense fusion of post-grunge, alternative metal, industrial metal, rap metal, rap rock, and nu metal influences. Formed in 1997, the band consists of Stephen Richards (vocals, guitar), Mike DeWolf (guitar), Phil Lipscomb (bass), and Jarrod Montague (drums). Taproot gained prominence with their debut album Gift and continued to evolve their sound with subsequent releases like Welcome and Blue-Sky Research. Their collaborations with prominent producers and artists such as Toby Wright and Billy Corgan have helped shape their distinctive style, which blends heavy riffs with melodic vocal lines and a rhythmic punch.
How to Sound Like Taproot
Taproot's music is characterized by its aggressive yet melodic sonic texture, balancing heavy guitar riffs with atmospheric elements. The guitar work often features a gritty, distorted tone, achieved through the use of gear like the Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier 150W Solo Head and Ibanez AX110XL guitars. This gives their music a powerful, driving force that complements the raw, dynamic vocal delivery of Stephen Richards. The rhythm section, anchored by Phil Lipscomb's bass and Jarrod Montague's drums, provides a solid yet intricate foundation, allowing for both tight, syncopated grooves and expansive, anthemic moments. Taproot's ability to seamlessly integrate industrial and rap elements into their sound further enhances their music's complexity and depth, making them a standout act in the alternative metal scene.
