About

The Feelies are an influential American band that emerged from the post-punk era, known for their unique blend of new wave, indie rock, and jangle pop. Formed in 1976 in Haledon, New Jersey, the group was initially comprised of Bill Million (guitar, vocals), Glenn Mercer (guitar, vocals), John J. (bass), and Dave Weckerman (drums). Over the years, the lineup evolved, with notable members including Keith Clayton (bass), Vinny Denunzio (drums), and Anton Fier (drums). The Feelies' angular guitar work and driving rhythms have made them a touchstone in the American indie music scene, with their debut album Crazy Rhythms being a critical favorite.

How to Sound Like The Feelies

The Feelies' sound is characterized by nervous energy and intricate guitar interplay. Their music often features jangly, clean guitar tones that can be achieved with instruments like the Fender Stratocaster and Gibson ES-335, which are known for their bright, articulate sound. The band’s dual-guitar approach creates a mesmerizing, layered texture, complemented by the driving, rhythmic foundation of their percussion. The use of an EBow by Glenn Mercer adds a sustained, drone-like quality to their compositions, enhancing their avant-garde pop aesthetic. The combination of these elements results in a sound that is both dynamic and hypnotic, capturing the frenetic yet melodic spirit of the post-punk era.
