About
The Go-Betweens were a seminal Australian rock band known for their jangly guitar pop and literate songwriting. Formed in 1977 in Brisbane, Australia, by Robert Forster (vocals, guitar) and Grant McLennan (vocals, bass, later guitar), the group expanded to include Lindy Morrison (drums), Robert Vickers (bass), and Amanda Brown (violin, oboe, guitar, keyboards). Their music spans genres such as New Wave, Jangle Pop, and Alternative Rock, drawing influences from both the punk ethos of their contemporaries and the melodic sensibilities of 1960s pop. Despite never achieving mainstream commercial success, The Go-Betweens cultivated a dedicated fan base and received significant critical acclaim for their enduring albums like 16 Lovers Lane.
How to Sound Like The Go-Betweens
Capturing The Go-Betweens' sound involves channeling their melodic, jangly guitar tones that are both clean and resonant, often complemented by lush, layered instrumentation. This sound is typically achieved using Fender guitars, known for their bright, articulate tones, paired with Fender '65 Twin Reverb amplifiers to provide a clear, vibrant backdrop. Their music often features a mix of electric and acoustic textures, with subtle use of reverb and delay to add depth without overpowering their thoughtful, introspective lyrics. The rhythmic foundation, while straightforward, is dynamic and supportive, allowing the intricate guitar work and vocals to take center stage.
