About
The Triffids are an influential Australian band known for their evocative blend of pop rock, indie rock, folk rock, and jangle pop. Formed in Perth in 1980, the group was spearheaded by the charismatic David McComb (vocals, guitar), along with his brother Robert McComb (guitar, violin), and Alsy MacDonald (drums). The lineup was completed by Martyn P. Casey (bass) and Jill Birt (keyboards), with the later addition of Evil Graham Lee (steel guitar). The Triffids' music reflects the stark landscapes of their Australian roots, combining elements of country and blues to create haunting narratives of isolation and emotional depth.
How to Sound Like The Triffids
The Triffids' sound is characterized by rich, atmospheric textures and melancholic melodies that evoke a sense of desolation and longing. Their music often features warm, jangly guitar tones, achieved through the use of instruments like the Fender Jazzmaster and Gretsch Country Gentleman. These guitars, paired with subtle reverb and delay effects, contribute to the band's expansive sonic landscape. The bass lines are melodic yet understated, often played on a Fender Precision Bass, providing a solid yet unobtrusive foundation. The drums and steel guitar interweave to enhance the storytelling aspect of their songs, creating an immersive listening experience that resonates with emotional intensity.
