About
The Winery Dogs is an American hard rock supergroup that channels the raw energy of blues rock and heavy metal. Formed in 2012, the band consists of three virtuoso musicians: Richie Kotzen (vocals, guitar), known for his work with Poison and Mr. Big; Billy Sheehan (bass), celebrated for his collaborations with David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, and Steve Vai; and Mike Portnoy (drums), the co-founder of Dream Theater. Drawing inspiration from the classic rock of the 1970s and their own storied pasts, The Winery Dogs deliver a powerful mix of technical skill and gritty rock sensibilities.
How to Sound Like The Winery Dogs
The Winery Dogs' sound is characterized by its aggressive and dynamic textures, seamlessly blending intricate musicianship with a bluesy, hard-hitting edge. Richie Kotzen's guitar work often features warm, crunchy tones, achieved using gear like the Cornford RK100 and Marshall JCM800 2210, which provide a robust and versatile foundation for both soaring solos and riff-driven progressions. Billy Sheehan's bass lines are both melodic and thunderous, utilizing the Pearce BC-1 Bass Preamp to craft a sound that is punchy yet articulate. Meanwhile, Mike Portnoy's drumming is both powerful and precise, anchoring the trio's sound with rhythmic complexity and an energetic drive. Together, these elements create a soundscape that is as intricate as it is intense, embodying the spirit of modern hard rock with a nod to its roots.
