About
Thorns is a pioneering Norwegian black metal project that has played a crucial role in shaping the genre since its inception in the late '80s. Originally formed under the name Stigma Diabolicum, the group was founded by Snorre W. Ruch (vocals, guitar, keyboards), along with Marius Vold (bass, vocals) and Bård "Faust" Eithun (drums). Thorns is renowned for its blend of black metal, industrial elements, and dark ambient textures, making them a unique and influential force within the Norwegian metal scene. Over the years, the band has seen various collaborators, including notable figures like Satyr Wongraven of Satyricon and Aldrahn of Dødheimsgard, contributing to their evolving sound.
How to Sound Like Thorns
Thorns' sound is characterized by its raw, aggressive intensity combined with an ambient, atmospheric depth. The music often features distorted, razor-sharp guitar riffs layered with haunting, industrial undertones, creating a chilling soundscape. Snorre W. Ruch's use of the Gibson Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar provides a solid, heavy foundation, while effects like the Ibanez Super Tube and Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion pedals add a gritty, overdriven edge that enhances the music's dark, foreboding atmosphere. The juxtaposition of relentless rhythms and ambient layers creates a sound that is both menacing and mesmerizing, capturing the essence of Thorns' innovative approach to black metal.
