About
1349 is a Norwegian black metal band originating from Oslo, known for their raw and aggressive sound that pays homage to the second wave of Norwegian black metal. Formed in 1997, the group consists of Olav "Ravn" Bergene (vocals), Idar "Archaon" Burheim (guitar), Tor Risdal "Seidemann" Stavenes (bass), and Kjetil Vidar "Frost" Haraldstad (drums). They took their name from the year the Black Death reached Norway, a fitting moniker for their dark, intense music. With a sound characterized by high-speed drumming and unrelenting guitar work, 1349 has become a staple in the black metal scene with albums like Liberation and Beyond the Apocalypse.
How to Sound Like 1349
1349’s sound is defined by its relentless intensity and raw edge. Their music features buzzing, distorted guitar tones that embody the chaos and aggression of classic black metal. These tones are often achieved using high-gain amplifiers like the Engl Powerball II E645/2, which delivers the piercing clarity and powerful distortion necessary for their style. The drumming, courtesy of Frost, is characterized by rapid blast beats and complex rhythms, creating a driving force that underpins their chaotic sound. Bass lines, played by Seidemann, weave tightly around the guitar riffs, adding depth without overshadowing the frenetic energy. The overall atmosphere is dark and foreboding, supported by the band's use of corpse paint and theatrical live performances that enhance their brutal sonic onslaught.
