Founded in Rochester, New York in 1984 by a team of former MXR engineers — Phil Betette, Tony Gambacurta, John Langlouise, Richard Neutrour, and Terry Sherwood — ART (Applied Research and Technology) began by building rackmount digital reverbs for the recording market. The company quickly expanded into a full range of studio and live sound tools, and in 1995 introduced the Tube MP, a compact tube microphone preamp designed to make tube warmth accessible beyond big-budget studios. The Tube MP was nominated for a TEC Award in 1996 and went on to become one of the best-selling external mic preamps in the world.

ART joined the Yorkville Sound family in 1999, with product development headquartered near Toronto, Canada, and sales and service based in upstate New York.
