Blackmachine is a one-person guitar workshop run by luthier Doug Campbell out of London, England. Campbell hand-builds every instrument himself, working in extremely small numbers and without CNC machinery, and has become known for a specific aesthetic and feel: lightweight tonewoods, oil finishes, sharply pointed offset horns, and a stripped-down hardware layout typically paired with high-output pickups from boutique makers such as Bare Knuckle.
The core lineup centers on a small family of bolt-on, fixed-bridge solidbodies, including the six-string B2 and B6, the seven-string B7, and the F7 and F8 extended-range models, along with the B6R and a six-string baritone-leaning VI. Output is famously sporadic — Campbell does very little marketing and rarely opens his order book — which has turned used Blackmachines into some of the most sought-after instruments in the modern progressive and djent guitar world, with secondhand prices well above their original build cost.
The brand became closely associated with the early djent scene through Periphery, whose members Misha Mansoor, Jake Bowen, and Adam "Nolly" Getgood used Blackmachine guitars during the band's formative records. Mansoor in particular has cited his Blackmachine B6 as a foundational instrument for his playing and writing, and the design language of those guitars has gone on to influence a wide range of subsequent boutique and production builders.
Blackmachine has 3 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars and Extended Range Guitars. Their gear is featured by 4 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock and Metal. Notable users include Misha Mansoor, Adam Nolly Getgood, and Jake Bowen.
