Commodore was a guitar and bass brand distributed in the United Kingdom from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s. The instruments sold under the name were manufactured in Japan by Matsumoku, a factory that also built guitars for Aria, Epiphone, Electra, Univox, Ventura, and others. As a result, many Commodore models share construction and specifications with better-known equivalents from the same facility.
The lineup included the 179 solid-body electric (1967–1971), the N177 and N25 hollow-body electrics, and the N180, 181, and N40 basses. The N25 in particular is often cited as a near-identical sibling to the Epiphone 5102T / EA-250 semi-hollow. Commodore instruments were positioned as affordable alternatives to American imports for British players, featuring adjustable bridges, truss rods, and typical Matsumoku build quality of the period.
The Commodore name functioned as a UK importer's trademark rather than a standalone workshop, and the brand has not been in active production since the mid-1970s. It remains of interest primarily to collectors of Matsumoku-era Japanese guitars.
